Quenching Fiery Darts

T he persecution I've received as a believer has not been in the form of violent physical attacks but verbal ones.

I've had words spoken to hurt or destroy me, my ministry or my church. Those words were shot out as darts set on fire of hell. I could have been brought down by any of them but instead I had a shield that came between them and me - my shield of faith!

Paul instructs and exhorts us,

"Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." Ephesians 6:16 - NKJV.

The shield of faith is essential armour for every Christian. You'll recognise this very clearly when you understand something about the "fiery darts of the wicked one". So often those darts are the unbridled things, or the malicious things, that people say. James tells us,

"The tongue is a flame of fire...It can turn the course of your life into a blazing flame of destruction, for it is set on fire of hell itself." James 3:6 - New Living Translation

The devil, given the slightest opportunity, will set the tongue on fire to cause words to go out like fiery darts from hell. The sting of words like that must have been felt by all of us at one time or another.

A lesson in a dream

I was given a dream when I was a very young Christian that pulled me up when I was down because of stinging words. In the dream I was shut up in a lion's den - something like Daniel, only I was not alone. I was seated with other Christians on a raised platform at one end of the den.

One after another lions were leaping at me but each lion fell to the ground as I rebuked it in the name of Jesus. In spite of this, I was in an awful state because I was getting beat up by the other Christians!

The moment I woke up I prayed, "Lord, what does this mean?" He answered, "You're doing great at dealing with evil spirits but you're letting every thoughtless, critical word other Christians say get through to you and hurt you!" I'll never forget that lesson - it taught me the importance of my shield of faith.

If you have your shield of faith up you don't have to be hurt by words from any source or anyone! Your shield of faith can stop every fiery dart from getting through to you.

Faith forms a shield that is able to put out the fire and thrust of hellish darts or arrows! As faith comes into your life - and it does as you hear the Word of God - it creates a barrier between you and the fiery darts of the wicked one.

How to deal with fiery darts

If you're going to live all out for Christ there will be times when people will mouth off fiery darts against you. Therefore, it's important to know two things. Firstly, the devil's the one originating those darts - his intention is to fatally wound you. Secondly, you can render those darts all harmless with faith as your shield.

Faith answers every bad or malicious report. It answers impending defeat with promises of impending victory! It answers "every tongue risen up against you in judgement" with a proclamation of who you are in Christ! (Isaiah 54:17)

Faith will meet every fiery dart with a proclamation. Faith proclaims who you are in Christ. It proclaims what He's done for you. It proclaims what, by His grace, He will be accomplishing through you.

Faith that has such a proclamation becomes yours by hearing and hearing the Word of God! (Romans 10:17)

Save yourself from hurts and wounds - keep up the shield of faith!
