Portraits of Christ
Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross.
Hebrews 12:2 - NKJV
When I was young I attended a Catholic junior school. In the school hall at different points around the four walls were portraits of the Cross. They called them stations of the Cross. At Easter pupils made their way around those stations to pray. I thought about that recently when I found in my Thompson Study Bible the portraits of Christ that John's Gospel presents. Its twenty-one chapters give us twenty-one portraits of Christ.
As I reflected on those portraits of Christ I was reminded of His completeness. He is all any of us need! In chapter twenty-one He is the Restorer. He restores my soul. He restores me to God. He restores me to fellowship. In chapter twenty He is the Victor of Death. How can I be afraid of any enemy when I know my Saviour is the victor over every enemy including the last enemy which is death? In chapter nine He is the Light of the World. How can I fret over finding my way in life when I know my Saviour is the Light for my path? Psa.23:1, Rom.8:37, Psa.27:1.
As a pastor I pray daily for members of my church. Chapter three in John's Gospel presents Jesus as the Divine Teacher. I know people in my church who particularly need that personal teaching from their Saviour. I pray for them confident in Jesus. Similarly, in chapter fifteen Jesus is presented as the True Vine. I pray for those who are ill at ease that they may see Christ as the True Vine and themselves as branches in Him. 2Cor.3:18, Phil.4:13.
See Jesus today as the One you need!
