Miracles for you and me

Part 1: Church life and miracles

"How should we view miracles? Miracles excite us. How do they fit into the Christian life-style? Should a Christian life goal be to get over to wherever lots of miracles are happening? The New Testament has a lot to say about miracles let's take a look at it and get some answers to the questions we ask about miracles."

Miracles are a marvellous reality found in the zone of faith around Jesus Christ. In that zone miracles are common place and yet always awe inspiring bringing forth praise to God.

Two thousand years ago Jesus Christ walked among us. When He did "we beheld His glory". Frequently, this was by the working of signs and wonders among the people. They saw and experienced miracles among them.

The apostle John in his Gospel announced the arrival of Christ on Earth in this way,

The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 - NKJV

(Content of this section: As Jesus ministered on Earth miracles of restoration brought wholeness and well-being)

While Jesus was walking among humanity those who found themselves in His presence received miracles of restoration. They were restored to wholeness and well-being of body, mind and spirit. Christ's glory was visible to all in the works He did among men.

The apostle Matthew in his Gospel recorded it this way,

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Matthew 8:17-18 - NKJV

(Content of this section: St Mark tells the story of the miracle that restored a woman to wholeness after 12 years of illness)

On one occasion a woman approached Jesus desperate for healing after 12 years with an illness. The apostle Mark in his Gospel gives us a marvellous account of the miracle that occurred in her life. He wrote,

And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

Mark 5:25-29 - NKJV

Such miracles as this one which restored the woman with the haemorrhage was an almost daily occurrence in Christ's earthly ministry. Today His ministry continues. It is from Heaven and it is still among us.

In this present time, it is still a daily occurrence for miracles of healing and restoration to be received in the name of Jesus Christ. Christ still ministers among us from His place of highest honour at the right hand of God the Father. This ministry is carried out in human lives by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. It is always in the name of Jesus Christ.

(Content of this section: After the resurrection of Jesus Christ a lame man was miraculous made to walk at a word from the Apostle Peter)

We read in the Book of Acts a startling example of a miracle of healing and restoration. It occurred within weeks of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The background to it was that on the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples of Jesus Christ. The apostles Peter and John were dramatically changed men as a result because after it they were walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is what happened next:

Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength.
And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

Acts 8:1- 16 - NKJV

(Content of this section: There is a ministry of miracles of healing at the hand of those who believe in Jesus Christ)

Notice the human involvement in the story of this miracle. Believers in the authority of the name of Jesus were present in the power of the Holy Spirit and speaking and acting in the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The apostle Peter was used of God to convey healing in Christ Jesus to the lame man.

This is exactly what Jesus said was to happen. Before His final farewell to His disciples He said,

He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name...they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Mark 16:15-18 - NKJV

(Content of this section: There is a glorious ministry of the Holy Spirit through believing Christians)

Notice that Jesus Christ declared that miracles of recovery from sickness would accompany people believing in Him.

People who walk in the zone of faith around Jesus Christ have the power to heal in the name of Jesus Christ. As a result there are healings in the church of Jesus Christ. Healings are also happening as believing Christians go out preaching the Gospel and laying hands on the sick as they go.

This is all part of the glorious ministry of the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul sets this out for us,

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 - NKJV
